Values-based recruitment

Values-based recruitment is an evidence-based approach that enables employers to understand a candidate’s values, behaviours and attitudes, and assess whether they align with the values, culture and expectations of the workplace.

Recruit people who share your values. Values-based recruitment helps you identify candidates whose values, behaviours and attitudes align with your organisation and the people you support.

Rather than focusing solely on skills and experience, it helps you recruit people who are more likely to deliver compassionate, person-centred care and thrive within your workplace culture.

Employers who use values-based recruitment have reported a range of benefits, including lower recruitment costs, improved staff retention, better performance and a positive return on investment.

Whether you're an individual employer or a larger organisation, this toolkit provides practical guidance to help you introduce and embed values-based recruitment across your recruitment and retention practices.

The five stages of values-based recruitment

The toolkit follows five simple stages to help you attract, recruit and retain the right people. Each stage includes practical guidance and resources to support implementation.

  1. Articulate :Define the values and behaviours that are important to your organisation and communicate them clearly to current and prospective employees.

  2. Attract: Promote your vacancies in a way that appeals to people who share your organisation's values and purpose.

  3. Apply: Design an application process that enables candidates to demonstrate their values, behaviours and motivation.

  4. Assess: Use interviews and selection methods that help you identify candidates whose values and behaviours are the right fit for your organisation.

  5. Assimilate: Support new staff through induction, supervision and ongoing development so they understand your expectations and can put your organisational values into practice.
